| Description | The records in this collection comprise the archives of the British Jewellery and Giftware Federation, its constituent organisations and predecessors. The complex history of the Federation is summarised in 'The British Jewellers' Association, 1887-1987' (see item 611), to which the reader is referred for a detailed account. The Birmingham Jewellers and Silversmiths Association (B.J.S.A.) was formed in 1887 and retained that name until 1947, when its national coverage and broadening membership brought about a change to the British Joint Association of Goldsmiths, Silversmiths, Horological and Kindred Trades (B.J.A.). In 1970 this became one of the member organizations of the Federation. Other bodies which subsequently became part of the B.J.S.A., the B.J.A. or the Federation, and whose records will be found within this archive, are the Metal Finishing Association, the Fancy Goods (later Giftware) Association, the British Mechanical Lighter Trade Association, the National Leather Goods and Saddlery Manufacturers Association, and the London Wholesale Jewellers and Allied Trades Association.
