AdminHistoryThe Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners was established in 1860 as a mutual aid trade union, becoming the Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers in c.1920. Eligibility for membership depended on age, health and length of employment in the trade. Weekly contributions to a central fund were administered by the Branch Treasurer and Check Steward, payments from it being made for sickness, unemployment, superannuation, funeral expenses and travelling expenses.
