Description | This collection mainly consists of 78 letters from Henry Havelock Ellis (1859 - 1939), the noted pioneer in the scientific study of sex, author, critic and editor, to Bernard Sleigh, an artist and visiting teacher of wood engraving at Birmingham School of Art. Although the two men appear only to have met once [MS 854/32-41], this series documents their increasing respect for each other's work with Havelock Ellis often sending copies of his writings and books from his library in reciprocation for books and engravings sent to him by Bernard Sleigh. Many of these letters have been described in detail in Bernard Sleigh's book 'Notes on the Letters of Havelock Ellis to Bernard Sleigh, 1916 - 1939', with a forward by Lawrence Houseman, Birmingham, City of Birmingham School of Printing, 1940. A summary list only is therefore given here. |
