AdminHistoryThe Law Committee was first appointed in December 1843, though surviving minutes date from May 1844. Originally consisting of twelve members in 1843, this was reduced to eight in subsequent years. Its function was to advise the Council on matters of law and the courts. Examples of such matters on which the committee would offer advice to the Town Clerk or the main Council included the recovery of rates collected by Overseers (but not paid to the Council); a disputed case of finances with the County of Warwick; petitions to parliament; court business and use of Borough funds. The minutes for this committee cease in July 1851, but the committee was not formerly disbanded within them, and may have continued.
