AdminHistoryThe Additional Accommodation Sub-Committee was formed in July 1919 to advise the main committee, and deal with matters relating to the need for additional accommodation and building extensions within the Council departments. In January 1921 the name of the Sub-Committee was changed to the Additional Accommodation and Post-War Questions Sub-Committee to reflect that its remit now encompassed the vaguely titled ‘post-war questions’, which covered such issues as memorial tablets, although in practice its main function had changed very little. The name of the sub-committee changed again in December 1921, becoming the Staff and Accommodation Sub-Committee, so named in response to a protest received by the Insurance Superintendents of the Industrial and Life Assurance Offices regarding various matters regarding the Corporation’s Staff Insurance Scheme. The sub-committee did take over staffing issues such as salaries, appointments and transfers. A number of smaller sub-sub-committees also reported to this sub-committee to consider matters relating to municipal buildings and staffing, the local courts, the Statistics Office and other administrative business (see BCC 1/AG/36/1/6, 18 - 19, 25 and 28).
