AdminHistoryThe Entertainments Sub-Committee was appointed in November 1948 to liaise with the Parks, Catering, Baths and Education Committees over the question on whether these committees should be left to make their own arrangements regarding entertainments on their land or premises, or to continue with the Catering and Entertainments Committee. Further, the sub-committee was for implementing the Local Government Act, 1948, which allowed for a much wider form of ‘entertainments’, including the maintenance of an orchestra, theatre, and concert hall. Through this the city of Birmingham gave aid to theatres such as the Repertory and Crescent, as well as acting guilds and societies such as the Birmingham and District Theatre Guild. In June 1966, the sub-committee was amalgamated with the Information Sub-Committee (see BCC/1/AG/27), forming the Entertainments and Information Sub-Committee (see BCC/1/AG/34), although the existing the Entertainments Sub-Committee minute sequence continued as before.
