AdminHistoryThe Gaol Committee was formed in June 1856, although it is incorrectly given as July in the minutes (see draft minute book in Other Committee Records). The committee comprised of the Lord Mayor and eight other members of the Council. Its purpose was simply to get the Borough Treasurer and the Finance Committee to pay the accounts of the borough prison. The committee disbanded itself in November 1857, as it did not see the need for a special committee to do this task, and its function was transferred to the Finance Committee (see BCC/1/AH).
