AdminHistoryAfter the appointment and demise of the apparently ineffectual Public Works Sub-Committee the previous year, a full Sewerage Committee was formed in October 1858. Its function was to 'inquire into the efficiency or otherwise of the present system of sewerage and its effect on the health of the people of the Borough'. The committee was authorised to examine any plans or paperwork of the Corporation and to interview any 'witnesses', then to report to the Council. They reported at the December meeting of the Council in 1859, proposing several ideas for the improvement of flushing and flow within the pipe network; however, the borough still remained reliant on its cesspits and cesspools at this time.
