Date1875 - 1899
DescriptionThe minutes are handwritten and signed by the committee Chairman. Minutes BCC/1/AX/2/1/1 are in an untitled minute volume. Minutes BCC/1/AX/2/1/2 - 6 are entitled 'Improvement Sub-Committee Minutes', with numbers 4 - 6 actually numbered. The majority of the minutes comprise correspondence and reports concerning the sub-committees dealings with the Martin and Chamberlain practice, the architects commissioned to undertake most of the improvement works in central Birmingham at this time. There are also accounts, tenders and progress reports relating to the renovation and demolition of existing properties and the construction of new ones, particularly the new Victoria Law Courts. Additionally, the minutes detail compensation cases of individual businessmen (particularly pub landlords and shopkeepers) and tenants of houses owned by the Corporation who faced eviction from their property or whose livelihoods were otherwise affected by the improvement works, and the merits of each case as judged by the sub-committee. In many respects the minutes complement in more detail the information on improvement works carried out on various properties and streets documented in the minutes of the main Improvement Committee (see BCC/1/AX/1/1).
