AdminHistoryThe Central School of Arts and Crafts in Margaret Street, known as the College of Arts and Crafts from 1937, and then the College of Art and Design from 1966, provided day and evening classes and was administered by the standing School of Art Sub-Committee. No records have been located for the School of Art Sub-Committee but reports of the School of Art Sub-Committee to the Education Committee are printed in the Education Committee minutes (see BCC/1/BH/1/1/1).

In January 1962 the Finance and General Purposes Sub-Committee reported on the issue of a Memorandum by the National Council for Diplomas in Art and Design which included a requirement for all colleges conducting diploma courses to have a suitably constituted governing body. The Finance and General Purposes Sub-Committee after consultation with the School of Art Sub-Committee and the Further Education Sub-Committee felt that a separately constituted Governing Body of the College should be established with effect from the beginning of the municipal year 1962 - 1963. The proposals of the Finance and General Purposes Sub-Committee were approved by the Education Committee and took effect from the recommended date. The Governing Body was to be made up of members of the Education Committee (three of those to be from the Further Education Sub-Committee), persons of ‘experience in education, art and crafts or industry or the professions’ and persons recommended by the West Midlands Advisory Council for Further Education, the University of Birmingham, the Federation of British Industries (Midland Region), the Birmingham Trades Council and the Birmingham and Five Counties Architectural Association.

The duties of the Governing Body included the general direction and management of the College; informing the Education Committee of issues relating to property maintenance and repairs; consulting with the Education Committee on the salaries, grading and appointment of the staff of the College; and providing the Education Committee with reports on the College. The Governing Body of the College of Arts and Crafts first met in June 1962. As the name of the College was changed from 1 January 1966 to the College of Art and Design, the Governing Body similarly became known as the Governing Body of the College of Art and Design.
