| AdminHistory | The Youth Service Advisory Committee was established at the very first meeting of the Adult Education and Youth Sub-Committee (see BCC/1/BH/21/1) to 'advise them [Adult Education and Youth Sub-Committee] upon matters pertaining to the recreative and social activities and training of to young persons, with particular reference to the desirability of coordinating and developing the work of volunteers and people dealing with them'. Such matters related mainly to the Youth Service Building Programmes instigated by the Council, namely expenses and maintenance costs of buildings (and their facilities) that were owned or rented by the youth groups and organisations that fell under the auspices of the Birmingham Branch of the Standing Conference of Voluntary Youth Organisations (see BCC/1/BH/21/1).
The sub-committee considered reports sent by Birmingham's youth groups and organisations for inclusion in Capital Building Programmes and applications for funding and Capital Grants for these works. Appeals for assistance were borne out of general maintenance issues or lack of funds, although other youth clubs suffered from extreme and prolonged outbreaks of vandalism, as happened at Masefield Boys Club during 1972 - 1973, the costs of which were reported to be in the region of £250 by July 1973, a figure which could not be covered by members' subscriptions. The sub-committee also considered in more detail matters relating to the training and appointment of Birmingham's youth leaders. |
