AdminHistoryThe Bank Committee was appointed in 1916 to oversee the establishment and operation of the City Council War Savings Scheme, which led to the foundation of the Birmingham Corporation Savings Bank. In 1919, the committee negotiated with the Government to turn the temporary war bank into a permanent bank, with more financial freedom. The new Birmingham Municipal Bank opened in September 1919, and remained a department of the Council until 1976, when it became part of the Trustee Savings Bank. The committee oversaw all aspects of the bank, including lending, accommodation, establishment of branch outlets, security of premises, staffing and advertising.
