AdminHistoryThe Migration and Assistance Sub-Committee was derived from a sub-committee that reported to the Distress Committee (see BCC/1/BJ) appointed in November 1906 as the Emigration Sub-Committee, being renamed the Migration Sub-Committee in February, 1929. After the Local Government Act, 1929, the Migration and Assistance Committee was reduced to the status of a sub-committee of the newly established Public Assistance Committee (after March 1930). This sub-committee was delegated with wide responsibilities to advise the main committee on the policy and financial assistance required on matters of emigration, mainly to Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the USA, and the removal and resettlement to other parts of Great Britain of the unemployed, and gave names and destinations of those seeking emigration or removal. The sub-committee was only meeting annually by the time of the wholesale changes to the welfare system brought about with the passing of the National Assistance Act of 1948. A Migration and Assistance Special Sub-Sub-Committee also reported to this sub-committee. It was appointed in December 1928 to discuss the repayment and write off of loans given for migration and removal purposes (see BCC/1/CD/2/1/1).
