AccessConditionsThe records of the Blind Workshops Sub-Committee, later Industrial Centre for the Blind Sub-Committee and its related sub-sub-committees are extremely sensitive, and often name individual adult cases and people in care. The records have therefore been closed for 100 years in compliance with the Data Protection Act, 1998.
AdminHistoryThe 'Blind Workshops Sub-Committee' was formed in March 1952, but prior to this its function was undertaken by the Special Welfare Services Sub-Committee (see BCC/1/CU/3). The function of the 'Blind Workshops Sub-Committee' was to control and administer the 'Blind Workshops' at Harborne, which had now been transferred to the ownership of the City Council from the 'Birmingham Royal Institute for the Blind', as well as their staff. The sub-committee comprised of several Councillors and representatives from voluntary organisations for blind people. It was renamed the 'Industrial Centre for the Blind Sub-Committee' in May 1969, to reflect the official name of the centre, and there was no change in function; the minute sequence in the sub-committee minute books continued uninterrupted. A minor sub-sub-committee also reported to this sub-committee to consider the transfer of workshops to the City Council (see minute volume BCC/1/CU/10/1).
