| AdminHistory | This sub-committee was formed in July 1948. Its main function was the provision and control of welfare arrangements for people with hearing and visual impairments, for example blindness and deafness, which did not require hospital treatment. It also provided them with instructional, occupational and recreational facilities, as well as meals if necessary in their homes, hostels or workshops. In March 1952, the Blind Workshops Sub-Committee was formed (see BCC/1/CU/S/9), which took over this role from the Special Welfare Services Sub-Committee. The sub-committee also liaised with voluntary organisations, and sought to recover costs for maintenance from those that could contribute towards it. The Special Welfare Services Sub-Committee remained in operation until the Local Authority Social Services Act of 1970, when the Children’s Committee (see BCC/1/CT) and the Welfare Committee were merged into the new Social Services Committee (see BCC/1/DJ). |
