| AdminHistory | The Hospital Reform Committee was established in April 1890, following a conference during January 1890. Neither the conference nor committee were appointed by Birmingham City Council. The conference was called to enquire into the use of hospitals, which were over-stretched, and consisted of representatives of medical charities and organisations, as well as from the medical profession, under the care of the Lord Mayor and held at the Council House. The committee was established under the chairmanship of Judge Chalmers, and reported back to a second conference the following year. The committee recommended a General Council of Public Medical Institutions be appointed for the City; the formation of an Inquiry Agency to investigate applicants for treatment; regulations to exclude trivial cases which might more properly to be referred to the Poor Law Board; and persons referred by Provident Associations and medical Practitioners to be immediately admitted. |
