| Description | Although the deposited building plans and their corresponding registers and indexes pre-date the formal establishment of the Birmingham City Council Planning Committee in 1976, it was decided that all of the records relating to planning control in the city be listed under the Planning Committee prefix BCC/1/GG to avoid splitting the huge deposits of documentary material and technical drawings and plans across several collections. The Planning Department has remained constitutionally similar from 1976 to the present day, albeit with a couple of changes of name.
Prior to 1976 it has difficult to determine which particular committee or department had final approval, and it would appear that planning applications were submitted upwards through several bodies prior to approval or rejection. Splitting the plans and finding aids up into several smaller collections therefore complicates the process of cataloguing the material and indeed locating plans relating to specific years for the purposes of handling enquiries, given the sheer bulk of the collections and the fact the format of the records, indexes and registers does not change markedly across the earlier and later material.
Please note: There are NO surviving registers or indexes for building plans dated circa April 1961 to the end of 1965. |
