| Description | The photographs were mainly taken in the street by Games / Host City Volunteers so were effectively taken internally by these individuals on behalf of CWG Birmingham 2022 Team to document how the volunteers engaged with the public and visitors to the city during the period of the Games (28 July to 8 August 2022). Other photographs document training and familiarisation sessions for Volunteers run by the Team. Some of the photographs comprise screen grabs from various internal Council and external social media and other sites used for publicity purposes.
The majority of the photographs comprise low resolution JPEG or PNG image files and were taken on smartphones and other communication devices. In most instances it has not been possible to identify the photographer / creator, it is very likely the exact dates taken may have been lost or reset during various the transfer processes. Where the creator / artist / photographer can be identified, and other more detailed technical characteristics can be extracted from the file metadata, such information can be found in the Description field of the metadata attached to each file. A spreadsheet .csv containing the technical (EXIF) camera data has been filed with the photos, which exists in various stages of completeness depending on the file. See folder photos_exif_metadata. Before being ingested into the digital repository the files were analysed with a characterisation tool (DROID). In some cases, the image files characterised as file type different to that suggested by the extension. For example, those with the file extension .png (Portable Network Graphic) were identified during the file analysis and characterisation process (using DROID application) as JPEGs (which should be .jpg, .jpeg etc.). In a few instances the file format could not be identified at all, even file extensions were identified. All discrepancies in terms of file metadata as well as details relating are documented in the associated file transfer reports, documentation and metadata stored with the digital archive, or incorporated into the metadata of the digital file itself. Attempts to re-characterise or migrate these problematic file types following ingest.
