DescriptionArtist unknown, numbered '21' in pencil, showing side elevation (with view of plaque), end elevation and plan view, with main diagonal view showing artist's impression of finished casket at the top of the plan. Although this item is undated, the casket was presented to Alderman Ann Marie Howes by the Alderman J.R. Balmer, Lord Mayor of Birmingham, on being granted the Freedom of the City of Birmingham on 16 April 1955 (For more information about the presentation, see B COL 78 Newspaper Cuttings: Birmingham Biography, Vol. 45, 1954-1955, pp. 213-19, kept on open shelves in Heritage Research Area, Floor 4, Library of Birmingham). The honour was also conferred on the same date to Sydney Vernon, retiring Pro-Chancellor of the University of Birmingham, and Sir Barry Jackson, founder of the Birmingham Repertory Theatre (see also BCC/4/3/7/2/2).
