| Description | Kings Norton parish acquired three major properties during the twentieth century and records relating to these can be found in this section - 1. Kings Norton old Grammar School - The building known as Kings Norton Old Grammar School in Kings Norton Churchyard dates from as early as the fifteenth century (although the structure is not all of one period). It was in use as a grammar school by 1548 and remained in continuous use as a school until the later nineteenth century. It was sold by the Board of Education in 1912-13 and presented to the parish. The building was substantially restored in the later 1940s and was reopened in 1951, providing meeting rooms for the parish and local organisations. A very small quantity of material deposited by the parish relates to the building's use as a day school. For these records see below EP4/14/1 - The Old Grammar School also housed Thomas Hall's Library. (Thomas Hall was a curate of the parish and schoolmaster in the seventeenth century). The Library was presented to the city in 1892. 2. Saracen's Head, The Green - This property, formerly used as licensed premises, was presented to the parish in 1929 by Mitchells and Butler for parish use. 3. Parish hall, Westhill Road - Land was acquired in Westhill Road and a scheme launched to build a parish hall in 1957. It opened in 1960. See also EP 4/12/5 for material relating to Saracens Head in an additional accession. |
