| Description | The Appointment of Officers sub-committee was formed in April 1880 by the Visiting and General Purposes committee 'to consider and report upon the whole question of the appointment of the officers in the Workhouse, how they were appointed, their duties, the manner in which they are performed and also the general management of the several departments of the Workhouse' (see GP B/2/12/1/1, below). In November 1880 the committee changed its name, becoming the Special Enquiry Sub-Committee - however, an examination of the minutes shows that it continued much as before, with the same responsibilities and powers. The sub-committee ceased to exist in August 1881, although why this was the case remains unclear.
The committee consisted of 11 Guardians, and was responsible for all aspects of the employment of officials within the Union, including their recruitment, working hours, rates of pay and working conditions. The minutes contain information on all of these, and also include regular reports made to, and orders received from, the Visiting and General Purposes committee. The volume is not indexed. |
