| Description | Similarly to the Western Road and Erdington House sub-committees above (see GP B/2/3/15 and GP B/2/3/17), the Selly Oak House sub-committee reported to the House committee, was formed in 1912, and was responsible for administering the workhouse in this area of the union. Built in the late 1860s and finally completed in 1872, Selly Oak workhouse was originally within the bounds of the King's Norton Union (see GP/KN/2/5 and GP/KN/8 for details on the workhouse before the 1912 merger with the Aston and Birmingham Unions). By 1881 there were a total of 327 individuals lodged there. In 1922 it became Selly Oak Hospital, the former workhouse now a part of the physiotherapy department.
As with the Erdington House sub-committee, these minutes deal with all aspects of the workhouse, its inmates and the officials employed within it. The volumes are indexed. |
