TitleWorkhouse Management committee
LevelSub Series
Date1887 - 1912
DescriptionIt is unclear when the Workhouse Management committee was founded. The earliest surviving minutes date from May 1887, but the first reference to the committee is to be found in the Board of Guardians minutes for March of that year (see GP B/2/1/55). A printed copy of the Guardians' Standing Orders is included with the minutes, and this gives details of the committee, its composition, and main duties. The committee consisted of eighteen Guardians, whose job it was to appoint a number of visitors to visit the workhouse, and subsequently report back on the conditions found there. The committee also had responsibility for the workhouse buildings and their maintenance, the examination of the workhouse staff's reports, and the examination of applications by paupers for entry into the house.

The minutes themselves contain detailed information on all of the above subjects, along with minutes relating to the Guardians themselves, their election and resignation. The volumes are not indexed.
