| Description | The School sub-committee was founded some time before 1871, but the exact date is unclear. The Elementary Education Act of 1870 allowed for the founding of local school boards, which had the authority to raise funds for schools and to charge parents, and presumably the sub-committee was appointed in the wake of this act. In 1876, the Guardians were given the power to enforce compulsory school attendance, but by this point the School sub-committee had amalgamated with the House sub-committee (see GP B/2/3/3/4, above), which took over its visiting duties.
Consisting of 14 members, the sub-committee came under the authority of Visiting and General Purposes committee, and was responsible for appointing visitors to inspect the local schools. The sub-committee also oversaw the appointment and movement of school staff, and the minutes contain references both to them and to individual pupils. The volume is not indexed. |
