TitleLaw Estate and Building Committee
LevelSub Series
Date1849 - 1853
DescriptionThe Law Estate and Building committee was founded in 1849, and initially consisted of 26 Guardians. This committee may have been formed as the result of a merger between the earlier Estate and Law and Building committees - a note in the Guardians' minutes for November 1849 states that 'it is expedient that the various committees should be concentrated, with a view to lessen the great labour of the clerks and that in future none other than the following committees be appointed viz: the Finance committee, the Law Estate and Building committee, the Sanitary committee, and the General Purposes committee.' (see GP B/2/1/6)

As with the Estate and Law committee above, this committee dealt with any transactions relating to properties owned by the Union. Added to this was a responsibility for overseeing any building projects being carried out by the Guardians, whether they were the construction of new premises or the extension of existing ones. This volume covers the period during which the new workhouse on Birmingham Heath was constructed, and is therefore a valuable source regarding it.
