| Description | Following the 1662 Act of Settlement, all paupers who relied on relief from the parish were said to be 'settled' in that area in which they were born. It was this parish that had the responsibility of maintaining them, and were individuals to move away from this area, the law required that they should not become a burden on the rate-payers in another parish but be returned to their place of settlement. This volume contains those orders issued by the Warwickshire Justices of the Peace that required the parish of settlement to remove paupers from the Birmingham Union.
The orders were entered onto pre-printed forms, and as such contain limited details on individual paupers, giving just their name and parish of settlement. A copy of the order was kept by the Birmingham Guardians, with another given to the parish of settlement. The volume is indexed by both the name of the pauper and the parish of settlement. |
