| AdminHistory | The Chevra Kadisha, or Holy Brotherhood, is responsible for Jewish laws concerning funerals and burial.
According to the 1963 Laws of the Congregation, the Chevra Kadisha is made up of 14 members of the Congregation, the Executive, and 8 members of the Central Synagogue.
Although the minutes of the Chevra Kadisha begin in 1913, cemeteries, burial charges, and funeral arrangements are often mentioned in Council minutes before this date (JA/1/A/1). A Burial Board is mentioned in the Congregation's first Annual Report in 1854 and a few of its minutes are in the same volume as the minutes of the Finance and General Purposes Committee (JA/1/B/1/1). The Burial Board was still in existence in 1881; minutes of a meeting the Finance and General Purposes Committee held to revise the Congregation's Laws on 14 November 1881 say that the Burial Board should consist of 24 members of the Congregation. |
