Legal opinion given to the Congregation by J Cowling, solicitor, concerning a dispute between the Committee of the Hebrew National School and the builders of the school, Messrs Williams and Roberts, 22 June 1844. The builders 'contend that the original contract has become useless and void and they are at liberty to disregard the contract and are entitled to claim to be paid by measure and value and this according to the valuation of other parties than the architect of the Works'; the School Committee contends that the contract still stands. The document includes a summary of the dispute, a copy of the contract for the building of the Hebrew School, and notes by Cowling giving his opinion on the case, which supports the Committee.
