WVSC is a local development agency promoting effective voluntary action. It became a registered charity in 1981 and is also a company limited by guarantee independent from government. WVSC acts as a focal point for local voluntary action, provides a resource and information centre for the voluntary sector, develops new work to meet new needs and links up local agencies with similar concerns and assists in the presentation of their views to governmental and other agencies. The WVSC established a grant-giving scheme for women's groups in the area supported by the Barrow Cadbury Trust.
