Applicant overview: This file contains funding requests for a variety of adult literacy projects, some relating to offenders and the probation service. Birmingham Settlement (BS) operates an adult literacy programme with the support of the Leverhulme Trust. The Right to Read (RTR) project is a city of Birmingham initiative staffed largely by volunteers. The National Federation of Voluntary Literacy Schemes (NFVLS) works to coordinate and provide training standards for the many adult literacy programmes throughout the UK. The West Midlands Probation Joint Education Project (JEP) works with the Local Education Authority to provide literacy courses for probationers and their families. Nature of support: In 1977 the Trust made a bridging grant of £175 to BS's literacy programme pending support from the Leverhulme Trust. That same year a single grant of £150 was made to the RTR programme to provide refreshments for volunteers. In 1979 the Trust approved a grant of £4,000 to the NFVLS to cover the period from February 1979 to March 1980. In 1983 on the recommendation of Southfield Trustees a grant of £1,000 was made to the JEP to be paid via the Queensway Trust. In 1984 a further £3,000 was allocated to the project for the financial year running from 1984 to 1984.
