| Description | Annual reports from 1847 onwards have the title: 'Reports presented to the Subscribers of the Birmingham Blue Coat Charity School at the AGM with an account of receipts and disbursements, list of subscribers and summary of children in school.' which serves as an accurate description of the content of all the annual reports from 1818 onwards. As such, the reports give a list of the subscribers to the school (arranged alphabetically by surname) which lists the amount that the person has subscribed. Further information recorded in the reports includes: the numbers of pupils admitted by different charities/trusts, the names of children who had performed particularly well in a subject, lists of committee members and so on. The annual report itself gives an account of what has happened in the last year at the Blue Coat School - any notable occurrences and so on.
Later reports include 'extracts from the rules' at the front of the report which lay out the 'privilege of subscribers' in regard to nominating a pupil for the Blue Coat School. Rules include: 'each Subscriber be entitled to one vote for every child to be admitted for every Guinea annually subscribed' and 'any donor of the sum of £60 ... shall have the privilege of placing one child in the school at any period of the year' (these are the pupils admitted by purchase found in MS 1622 3/3/1). These rules are useful to anybody who wishes to better understand the process of subscription and nomination that took place at the Blue Coat School.
From 1847 the front page of the report has this title: 'Reports presented to the Subscribers of the Birmingham Blue Coat Charity School at the AGM with an account of receipts and disbursements, list of subscribers and summary of children in school.' The contents of the reports are as per this title. The lists of subscribers are alphabetical by Surname. Please note that we do not have a complete series of annual reports - we do not hold any annual reports for some years. |
