| Description | Incoming correspondence was stored in chronological order, being filed on a spike as it was received. As the volume of letters increased they were stored in bundles for each month. There are no letters for 1846. From 1850 onwards the filing system for letters was changed from one based only on date to one based on name of writer and date. Surnames beginning with the same letter were grouped together in bundles. |
