| Description | This is essentially a run of counterpart leases which were signed by the lessee and kept by the lessor. If surrendered the original lease would then be file placed into the sequence with its counterpart. Likewise, if assigned, the correspondence from the solicitor informing the lessor of this would be filed under the 'head lease' (i.e. counterpart) and seems true of other correspondence with lessee particularly about insurance in later years.
Each lease was assigned a running number generally pencilled on outside of counterpart. An abbreviated form of the document would then be written up in the lease books (MS 2126/3/5d/3) and a 'red reference code' then written onto counterpart usually in red ink. The red reference code = lease book volume number/page number.
Rarely a lease has no number pencilled on the counterpart but the word 'occupation' is written on the page of the lease book (where this is the case the word appears in square brackets for the index to lease numbers created by the archivist). There are also a few unusual lease numbers which start with a letter. The significance of this is not yet fully understood.
A few leases do not have Lord Calthorpe as the lessor. These are largely from the area of Harborne known as "Beech Lanes" and were probably leases already extant on the land when it was purchased in the 1850s (see D. Cannadine, Lords and Landlords (Leicester, 1980), p. 90). Related deeds can be found at MS 2126/9/2.

It was turnpiked 1725-6. However, Bromsgrove Road may also be used to mean what is later the Bristol Road.
