| AdminHistory | 'Nkunzi' is the Zulu word meaning 'black'. During Burke's visits to South Africa in 1990 and 1996 (see MS 2192/A/J and MS 2192/A/N), he became known as 'Nkunzi Myama': 'The Black Bull'. The Nkunzi exhibition was shown in 1998 at Soho House, Birmingham and the Central Library Birmingham, and it brought together pictures of the life of black people in Birmingham and in South Africa taken between the 1970s and 1996. The exhibition explored the contrasts and parallels of daily experience: from struggle and solidarity against oppression, to family scenes and social events - of black people in both countries. |
