A note on the back of the photograph states that the figures lining the entrance way represent the science of medicine and the art of surgery supported by philanthropy holding up the Lamp of Life and treading the Serpent of Death underfoot, with the City Arms below, and panels of white rose and May blossom in allusion to the laying of the foundation stone by the Duke and Duchess of York on 8 September 1894.
