DescriptionPhotographs of a medieval building in Much Park Street, Coventry, exposed to view through enemy action in November 1940.
The building had been formed into tenement dwellings and was not exposed to view until the bombing and subsequent demolition in 1940 destroyed the later accretions. The medieval remains were temporarily consolidated under the direction of E.H. Ford Esq., Engineer to the Corporation of Coventry.
The history and original purpose of the house is not known at present. It is thought that it may have been a merchant's house or possibly the hall of a guild. Mr Philip Chatwin, F.S.A. of the Birmingham Archaeological Society considers that it was probably a guest house of the Greyfriars whose precinct gate is about 100 yards to the south.
The fragment was listed under the Ministry of Home Security Scheme, by the Ancient Monuments Division of the Ministry of Works.
Copies of the following five photographs were deposited with The City Engineer, Coventry, the City Archivist, Coventry, and the National Buildings Record.
