| Description | Letters from John Walker, foreman and engineer to George & John Rennie, from 1821 to 1831. John Walker was employed as an engineer by John Rennie, and eventually came to act as his foreman. His responsibilities grew as Rennie’s health failed. Following Rennie’s death on 4 October 1821, Walker worked for his sons George and John, who carried on the business.
Walker’s role as an engineer and foreman led him to correspond with Boulton Watt & Co. Up until 1821, his letters were generally docketed as being from John Rennie, and they were kept alongside Rennie’s own letters. In early 1821, with Rennie’s health failing, Walker’s letters began to be docketed with his own name, and they appear to have been kept in a separate bundle.
The letters are addressed Boulton Watt & Co., William Creighton, James Watt Jr and William Murdock. There are also letters addressed to James Brown of Boulton Watt & Co.’s London office and John Mosley of the London banking agency. Brown and Mosley forwarded these letters to Soho.
