DescriptionLetters from Thomas Cobb and Cobb Paine & Judd from 1796 to 1798. Cobb Pain & Judd, paper mill owners of Banbury, for whom Thomas Cobb corresponded, purchased the engine belonging to John Brockliss at the nearby Sulgrave Mill in 1797. They also purchased copying machines from James Watt & Co. They sold the engine in Oct. 1798 to a Mr. William Clark of Lambeth who planned to erect it for Randall & Co., starch makers, also of Lambeth. This transaction was disapproved of by Boulton & Watt as it lead to uncertainty over premium payments. Cobb Pain & Judd withdrew from the sale and the engine was later sold to Hodgson & Co. Thomas Cobb was also a partner in Cobb Wheatly & Cobb, who enquired about Matthew Boulton’s coinage on 12 Aug. 1797.
