| Description | Letters from Thomas Telford, from 1795 to 1832. The letters mainly concern pumping engines for canals, water works and docks, including the Ellesmere Canal, the Caledonian Canal, Glasgow Water Works, Holyhead docks and St. Katharine’s Dock.
This bundle is an artificial one. The letters were gathered together by Henry Hazleton in the 1890s, and many show signs of having been displayed in wall cases and mounted in guard books. The letters appear to have been mainly removed from the now missing post-1798 Drawing Office correspondence, as most of the dockets are by John Southern. The bundle also contains several sheets of calculations by Southern, a letter from Watt to Southern, and a letter from John Telford of 23 March 1806. |
