This was the third engine at Shadwell; the first was erected in 1778 [see Portfolio 5/1104] and the second in 1784 [see Portfolio 5/1102]. This engine was referred to as a 16 horse engine despite its cylinder being slightly larger than the usual 16 horse design. The Catalogue of Old Engines lists this engine twice on p. 176. Hazleton allocated the new portfolio number 1101 to old book 296, but then moved the drawings to portfolio 1104, and moved some of the contents of portfolio 1104 (drawings for the first Shadwell engine) into this portfolio. Drawings for the 1798 crank engine are now in this portfolio, while all the drawings for the first engine have been united in portfolio 1104.
