Set of drawings sent to Soho 30 Apr. 1841: 5 schemes for direct engines, each with a front and side view of the engines on each sheet: No. 1, marked "Sketched with a view to bring in the present 150s…" (2 reverse copies); No. 2, titled "Sketch to bring in the present 150s" and marked "This sketch is copied from No. 1 except…"; No. 3, marked "…arranged from sketch sent to Soho 27 Apr. 1839"; No. 4, marked "This similar to No. 3…"; No. 5, marked "If a direct engine of new construction is made this appears to be the best"; letter from James Brown to Gilbert Hamilton dated London, 30 Apr. 1841, describing the drawings, rival engines etc. (2 sheets). "Scheme for Navy 150s Beam Engines No. 5" - coloured cross section, side view and plan of the engine room, boiler etc., made in the London office 18 May 1841; "No. 1 - Design for a pair of Direct Engines" and "No. 2 - Design for a pair of Beam Engines" - 2 sheets of coloured cross-sections, side views and plans of the engine room, boiler etc. (these drawings were made at Soho and are marked "Copy for Mr. Brown", but are not dated). Drawings of direct engines sent to Soho, Jul. 1841: Front and side views view of engines (the front view is marked "not adopted"; 2 larger scale side views - partially coloured drawings; "horizontal section" - partially coloured reverse drawing marked "not adopted"; plan and section of sleeper plate - coloured reverse drawing marked "not adopted"; cylinder and slide valve, side view of cylinder and nozzle, slide valve, front view of nozzle - coloured reverse drawings all bearing letter codes and all marked "not adopted"; plan and side and front views of the engines - coloured reverse drawings; cylinder and slide valve, cylinder and nozzle - partially coloured reverse drawings marked "not adopted". All these drawings were made in the London office.
