| Description | Engine Designs by James Watt, Edward Bull and Jonathan Hornblower’s Engines, Dutch Windmill etc. (3 items). 1339a. Edward Bull's Engine, Balcoath Mine. Circa 1792? 3 items. "Bull Engine" with 21 inch cylinder. Section of Bull's engine at Balcoath Mine - coloured original and reverse drawings (not dated, circa 1792?; Dickinson & Jenkins suggest this drawing was probably made by William Murdock). Section of engine marked "Bull's engine 1792". Engine made by Edward Bull for Balcoath Mine, Cornwall. The engine was one of the first made by Bull and was at work in early 1792. The characteristic feature of Bull's engines was that the cylinder was inverted, and placed directly over the pump. The pump rod was connected directly to this piston rod. The Balcoath engine was the subject of Boulton & Watt's action against Bull for infringing James Watt's patent. Published references: Dickinson & Jenkins plate XCVIII. |
