Sun & planet engine, with 48 inch cylinder, 2 working beams [?], parallel motions.
Reverse general view and plan showing 2 working beams connected to a common piston rod and cylinder, dated Dec. 1802, marked "Pluto"; reverse view of the cylinder and plan, dated Feb. 1803, showing different design for the connecting beam which linked the two working beams and marked "2nd sketch of proposed alteration of the 30 horse engines"; cross beam and piston rod cap and gudgeon, plummer block and gland - reverse drawings.
Also reverse drawing of injection pipe valve etc. dated 4 Apr. 1804; rough uncoded section and plan dated Mar. 1804 and marked "Pluto" (these were possibly for further alterations that never took place, as the plan shows a crank).
Also sheet of coloured drawings of sun & planet wheels and notes ordering them for Philips & Lee, sent by Lambert Hole Jackson & Co. to Boulton Watt & Co., dated 31 Oct. 1835.
Philips Wood & Lee (formerly Salford Twist Co.). Cotton mill, Salford. This engine was made from an alteration of the firm's two 30 horse power engines and a new 48 inch cylinder. George Lee was closely involved in planning the alterations. The firm appear to have referred to this engine as "Pluto". A 10 horse independent engine was later erected alongside "Pluto" [see Portfolio 5/844b]. This engine was omitted from the Catalogue of Old Engines.
