293. Turnbull Forbes & Co., West Indies (Sn). Jan., Feb. 1801, Dec. 1840. 4 items.
10 horse power double-acting crank engine, with 17 2/3 inch cylinder, 4 foot stroke, parallel motion, cast iron beam, cast iron connecting rod.
Plans and sections of the framing, boilers and condenser cistern for "P. Benfield" - reverse drawing; reverse general section of the engine and boilers, plans of the engine, cross-section of the boilers (4 drawings on 1 sheet); parallel motion - reverse drawing (also used for drawing HAV Hufton and HHJ Hollins Oldknow & Co.). All the drawings bear letter codes.
Also "Plan and Dimensions of a ten horse mill cheek on Plantation Herstelling, Rio Berbice" - drawing by M. Anderson, Dec. 1840 (the drawing is also marked "sketch of side frame for a sugar mill sent here by Mr. Brown from Denoon & Co. Mar. 1841" and "Engine sent out for assignees of Turnbull Forbes & Co. or Mr. Hooper").

For the estate of Paul Benfield, Berbice, ordered by Turnbull Forbes & Co. Sugar mill, West Indies. This was the first Boulton Watt & Co. engine for the West Indies, and had a brass cylinder and air pump and two copper boilers. John Rennie and Benfield had various discussions in 1799, and the order seems to have been originally placed with Boulton Watt & Co. in that year under guarantee of Schneider & Co. An engine coded "Sn" (for Schneider & Co.) was begun, and entered in Engine Order Book No. 2. However the order was delayed due to problems with Schneider & Co.'s credit. When the order finally went ahead in late 1800/early 1801, John Rennie told Boulton & Watt that he would get Turnbull Forbes & Co. to place the order. On 1 Jun. 1803 Rennie wrote to Boulton Watt & Co. saying that he had had a good account of the engine.
