For Philips & Lee. Cotton mill [?], Salford, Lancashire. This engine was of an usual arrangement which Boulton Watt & Co. referred to as "wiggle waggle". The inner end of the beam was connected directly to the piston rod, and the outer end was mounted on the engine framing. The connecting rod was connected to the beam between the beam's centre and inner end, and worked the crank shaft which was mounted in the centre of the base frame. Boulton Watt & Co. only made four engines employing this arrangement: this one, which Philips & Lee called "Sysyphus"; one for Thomas Lowe in 1807 [see Portfolio 5/845]; one for Bally Ellen & Steart in 1808 [see Portfolio 5/846]; and another for Philips & Lee in 1810 [see Portfolio 5/844b]. |
