| Description | Bundle of 106 letters to James Watt. Enclosed in a portfolio of card and marbled paper, on the spine of which is written ‘Miscells: 1810-11 1 to 103’. The dates covered are actually 1809 to 1811. The letters are numbered in red ink. The arrangement of the letters within the bundle appeared to be mostly chronological except for two packets: Letters 1 to 7 (old nos.) were tied in a separate packet and form correspondence from James Weston, 1810-11. Letters 49 to 57 (old nos.) and one unnumbered letter (R. Sharp) were also tied in a separate packet. These are from various correspondents (J.Houghton, S. Galton etc) about canal business. The letters have now been sorted as one alphabetical bundle, and letters for each individual arranged chronologically. The packet of letters about canal business has been filed under J. Houghton. There were 8 unnumbered letters [new nos. 1(2), 6(2), 10, 39, 55, 96] and there is one unnumbered enclosure [with letter 29 (new no.)]. There is a conspectus of old and new numbers at the end of the bundle list. The correspondent's name and the date has been written on the letter by James Watt, and most have a summary. This information appears in italics in the list below. Any summary in square brackets has been given by the cataloguer. |
