There is a bundle label, written in red ink, as follows: ' Mr Patrick Wilson and Dr Irvine's Letters. 1778 - 1781. No. 1 to 4.'
This same information is written in pencil on the outside of letter 4 [old no. 1].
The letters are numbered in red ink, and were in reverse chronological order.
Old No. 4 had been removed from the packet, perhaps for an exhibition, and had not been returned to the bundle. It had been numbered as C1/28 in 1993, when collected from Doldowlod.
The letters have now been arranged in chronological order, and renumbered.
The letters have a docket by James Watt with the name of the correspondent and the date.There were no summaries.
