| Description | Bundle of sixteen letters to James Watt, from Joseph Priestley, 1782 — 1824. There is no bundle label. The letters were numbered in 1987, in pencil. The letters have now been placed in chronological order and re-numbered. The letters have a docket by James Watt with the name of the correspondent and the date, and most have summaries. Any summary in square brackets has been provided by the cataloguer. Many of the letters are written in shorthand, a version of which was developed by Prietley. The final letter, from 1824, written to James Watt jr. by Joseph Priestley jr. sends a translation of three of the shorthand letters. [NB. There are other examples of Priestley's shorthand in his sermons and papers in the records of the Church of the Messiah; see collection reference: UC 2]. |
