DescriptionBundle of thirty-six letters and papers to James Watt, from various people, 1782 to 1787.
There is a bundle label, written in red ink, as follows:
' Miscellaneous Letters from Sir Joseph Fry and others. 1782 — 1787. No. 1 to 36.'
The letters are numbered in red ink.
Letter no. 1 (old no.) has '1783 - 1787' written on the outside in pencil, and the 3 of 1783 has been changed to a 2, with red pen.
Old no. 3 had been removed from the packet, perhaps for an exhibition, and had not been returned to the bundle. It had been tempoarily numbered as JWP C1/29 when collected in 1994. It has now been replaced in this bundle.
The letters were arranged in roughly chronological order, with the most recent first, except for those from Sir Joeseph Fry (old nos. 1 to 6) . Those from any one individual had been kept together.
They have now been arranged in chronological order beginning with the earliest, and renumbered.
There is a conspectus of old and new numbers at the end of the list.
The letters have dockets with the name of the correspondent and the date by James Watt, and some have summaries.
Any summary in square brackets has been provided by the cataloguer.
