Date1768 - 1774
DescriptionA bundle of twenty-one letters to James Watt, all but two from Professor Joseph Black.
There is a small bundle wrapper on which is written, in ink, by James Watt jr.: ‘ Dr Black’s letters to Mr Watt. Jan[uar]y 1768 to Feb[ruar]y 1774.’ ‘No. 1 to 20’ has been written in red ink.
The letters are numbered in red ink; except one (1773; Professor Russel’s account), which had no number. They were not arranged in a particular order.
The letters have now been arranged in chronological order and renumbered, and a conspectus of old and new numbers is given at the end of the list.
The correspondent’s name and the date had been written on the letter by James Watt.

Any summary in square brackets has been provided by the cataloguer.
Many of these letters have been transcribed for the book Partners in Science, eds. Eric Robinson and Douglas McKie, (1970). The number of the published letter is given below at the end of the docket, as, for example, (Partners no.6).
